5 hundred and twenty-5 Bnei Menashe Jews who made aliyah to Israel from India over the previous year are preparing for Rosh Hashanah and receive for the first time eating a dish that, whereas new to many of them, is an iconic staple of Jewish communities round the world: Gefilte fish.

The dish, traditionally linked to Ashkenazi Jews but adopted by Jews worldwide, is recurrently eaten on Jewish holidays, and Rosh Hashanah isn’t any exception.

Shavei Israel, an organization that has lobbied for Bnei Menashe Jews to intention aliyah for the previous 20 years, had presented the new olim with the dish at their absorption heart in Achziv.

Some of them enjoyed the taste of gefilte fish, whereas others politely referred to the extinct dish as an “obtained taste.”

“After 2,700 years of exile, the descendants of the Bnei Menashe are at final returning to their ancestral space of birth,” Shavei Israel founder and chairman Michael Freund acknowledged in an announcement. 

“There isn’t any higher time for them to originate up their new lives in the land of their ancestors than the beginning of the Jewish Current Year. The historical previous of this special team, which preserved its connection to the other people of Israel and the Land of Israel down by means of the generations, is intriguing and fascinating, and I want to need each and every of them a Shanah Tova U’metuka, a real and candy Current Year, for the first time in their ancestral space of birth.”

Bnei Menashe Jews claim to drop from the Tribe of Manasseh, one of the Ten Lost Tribes sent into exile by the Assyrian Empire. Residing in India, the team continues to practice Judaism, together with practices like Shabbat and kashrut. 

Up to now, Shavei Israel has helped 4,500 Bnei Menashe Jews intention aliyah, with 6,000 peaceful in India hoping to in the future practice.
