Good teams win on days when they’re bad.

And, boy, the ArCardinals were bad for much of Sunday afternoon, at least on offense. They didn’t beat the San Francisco 49ers, they survived them, 17-10, at State Farm Stadium.

The aerial shot of the season so far looks exquisite. The Cardinals are 5-0 for the first time since 1974 and only the fifth time in franchise history. They remain the NFL’s only undefeated team.

But zoom in on Sunday’s game, and there are reasons for worry. Tight end Maxx Williams might have been lost to the season with a knee injury. Center Rodney Hudson left early in the second half with a rib injury and didn’t return.

Those players who remained healthy did very little, especially quarterback Kyler Murray. Brilliant in the first four games, Murray was dull in this one. Scramble lanes were cut off. He lost too many yards on sacks and his accuracy was off.

At least he was off until late in the fourth quarter, when he twice found DeAndre Hopkins for important gains, including a 9-yard touchdown pass with 5: 13 left.

The Cardinals offense, so powerful in the first month of the season, scored early and late, but not in between.

The defense saved the Cardinals. It stopped the 49ers four times in five attempts to convert on fourth down. One of those stops came at the 1-yard line when linebacker Isaiah Simmons rocked 49ers quarterback Trey Lance just outside the goal line.

The Cardinals are not as bad as they looked Sunday. And they probably weren’t as good as their 4-0 start indicated.

They don’t have to apologize for that. But they do have work to do.
