KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brig Jay Naicker stated 5 gunmen in a double-cab bakkie blocked two law enforcement officials who had been transporting the prisoners from the Recent Prison to the Pietermaritzburg Justice of the Peace’s court docket.
“The suspects pointed firearms at the law enforcement officials and pressured start the rear of the truck. Thirty-one awaiting-trial prisoners escaped out of the 45 that were in the truck,” he stated.
By 10.20am, 23 prisoners were silent on the run.
It is believed that at least six of the escapees handed themselves over to court docket officials.
