Controversial Hawks colonel Welcome Mhlongo in 2015 tried to squash the fraud, theft and soft-rigging case towards Kaizer Chiefs soccer supervisor Bobby Motaung linked to the R1.2bn Mbombela Stadium case.

This was revealed on the state take inquiry on Friday by the Nationwide Prosecuting Authority’s Terence Joubert.

The case relates to Motaung and his industry friends having allegedly falsified a tax certificate for the intention of the stadium, as neatly as faking a municipal council letter, among a spread of charges.

Joubert told the Zondo commission that a colleague had complained to him in 2015 about stress he was facing from Mhlongo to gain rid of the case towards Motaung.
