Two people were killed during a serious crash on Highway 401 in Kingston, South Frontenac OPP say.
According to police, around 1 a.m. Wednesday, a transport truck going eastbound crossed over the centre median, entered the westbound lanes and collided with several other transport trucks. OPP said in total, four trucks were involved, with one of them pulling two trailers.
Two drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, OPP say, while another driver was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“The driver of the transport truck that veered off into the westbound lane and one driver in the westbound lane were pronounced dead at the scene,” said Const. Richard Martin.
“One driver was taken to local hospital for non-life threatening injuries and one driver sustained no injuries.”
The names of the deceased will not be released until all family members have been notified.

Traffic continues to be diverted off of the highway at the westbound Gardiners exit and the entrance remains closed. OPP expect the lanes to remain closed for most of the day.
Martin said the long road closure does not have anything to do with hazardous waste cleanup, but rather is allowing for extensive crash reconstruction to determine the cause of the collision.
