BEIJING (AP) — The thrills and chills of the big display are back big-time on the planet’s largest film market.

With the coronavirus smartly beneath control in China and cinemas operating at half capacity, moviegoers are smashing China’s field office records, with domestic productions far outpacing their Hollywood competitors.

February marked China’s all-time biggest month for film worth sales, which have so far totaled 11.2 billion yuan ($1.7 billion). China overtook the U.S. as the sphere’s biggest market for film worth sales last year as the American field office took a massive hit from the closure of cinemas because of the pandemic.

Chinese theaters had been able to reopen by midyear and have seen steady audience growth since then. Last year, China offered an estimated $2.7 billion in tickets compared to $2.3 billion in the U.S., which saw an 80% descend in worth sales. “The Eight Hundred,” an action drama glorifying China’s resistance to Japanese invaders in 1930s Shanghai, was the sphere’s biggest hit, making $461.3 million at the sphere office, most of it inside China.
