Meet the Israeli robot that ‘hears’ through a dead locust’s ear

In an extraordinary biological and technological style, researchers from Tel Aviv College (TAU) have efficiently connected the ear of a dead locust to a robot which receives electrical signals from it, and responds accordingly.

Video from the peek reveals extraordinary results: When the researchers clap as soon as, the locust’s ear hears the sound and the robot moves forward; when the researchers clap twice, the robot moves backwards.

The peek, which was revealed in the prestigious journal Sensors, sought to examine integrate advantages viewed in biological programs into expertise.

“We selected the sense of hearing, because it can be easily compared to existing applied sciences, in contrast to the sense of smell, for example, where the challenge is way greater,” says Dr. Ben M. Maoz of the Iby and Aladar Fleischman Faculty of Engineering and the Sagol College of Neuroscience, who supervised the peek together with Prof. Yossi Yovel and Prof. Amir Ayali, specialists from the College of Zoology and the Sagol College of Neuroscience.

“Our task was to replace the robot’s electronic microphone with a dead insect’s ear, use the ear’s ability to detect the electrical signals from the ambiance, on this case vibrations in the air, and, using a special chip, convert the insect enter to that of the robot,” Dr. Maoz said. 

The interdisciplinary peek was led by Idan Fishel, a joint graduate student, and integrated researchers Dr. Anton Sheinin, Yoni Amit, and Neta Shavil. 

In a multidisciplinary collaboration, the researchers had been able to isolate and characterize the dead locust’s ear and sustain it “alive” – meaning functional – prolonged ample to efficiently join it to the robot. In the final stage of the peek, the researchers succeeded to to find a way to purchase up the signals got by the locust’s ear in a way that it can be extinct by the robot to acknowledge accordingly.

Dr. Maoz wired the peek’s potential impact on the vitality industry, saying that “It may level-headed be understood that biological programs fritter away negligible vitality compared to electronic programs. They are miniature, and therefore also extremely economical and ambiance friendly.”

“In general, biological programs have a large advantage over technological programs – each relating to sensitivity and relating to vitality consumption,” he said. “This initiative opens the door to sensory integrations between robots and bugs – and may make far more cumbersome and costly dispositions in the area of robotics redundant.”

Dr. Maoz also elaborated on future sensory directions that research of this form can take, together with glance and smell. Certain animals have been know to survey spectrums of sunshine which dawdle past the capabilities of the human come across. Others can sniff out medication, bombs, certain diseases and even earthquakes.

“The sky is the restrict,” he concluded.
