On this day: Yael Arad wins first silver medal for Israel in 1992 Olympics

29 years in the past at this time time, July 30, Yael Arad changed into the first Israeli to win an Olympic medal, bringing house the silver in judo in the half of-middleweight class.

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, during Israel’s tenth Olympic appearance, 25 one year historical Arad changed into the first Israeli to win a medal for the nation. She dedicated her medal to the 11 Israeli victims of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre

Arad changed into born in Tel Aviv and began taking judo lessons at age 8, winning her first international title in 1984 at age 17. At this point she ranked Seventh in the enviornment among feminine Judokas.  

“That day I changed from a one who wished to a one who would possibly perchance perchance. And that made the full inequity,” Arad wrote about her silver win. 

After retiring, Arad went to educate the Israeli judo team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

5 of Israel’s medals maintain come from judo. 

As of now, no other Israeli has won an Olympic silver medal, and Israel in the mean time has one gold medal won by Gal Fridman in men’s sailboarding in 2004. 

To this point, in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games, Israel has won one bronze medal by Avishag Semberg in taekwondo.
