HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Glacier National Park announced its east-facet entrances would open for iciness game starting Thursday after the Blackfeet Tribal Industry Council voted Wednesday to allow the entrances to open for the 2021 season.
The park’s five entrances on the east facet of the million-acre park had been closed since final March after the Blackfeet tribe declared a pronounce of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The park’s west-facing entrances closed briefly final 365 days in response to the pandemic but they reopened in June.
The tribal council voted unanimously to allow the east entrances to open according to the increased availability of COVID-19 sorting out and vaccines, according to a news release. As of Wednesday, 95% of the tribe’s eligible population had been vaccinated.
“A 365 days ago we didn’t know where we had been going to be,” the Blackfeet tribe’s spokesperson James McNeely told the Missoulian. “And now, right here we’re, with correct two active conditions and no one in the health center. Here’s a plus for the Blackfeet folks and everyone enthusiastic. We’re open for enterprise.”
McNeely stated cowl carrying will remain a requirement on tribal land.
The park’s entrances at Two Treatment, Reduce again Bank and St. Mary will reopen on Thursday for foot traffic, skis and snowshoes, according to a news release. Chief Mountain Avenue will remain closed at the park boundary till avenue situations allow reopening.
The entrance at St. Mary allows automotive traffic on Going-to-the-Sun Avenue for 1.5 miles till the iciness gate closure at St. Mary Campground. The campground stays closed to iciness camping. The roads into Reduce again Bank and Two Treatment remain closed to automotive traffic for the iciness.
Deliberate constructing started on Many Glacier Avenue earlier this week. The avenue will remain closed to autos thru Can also 28. Hikers and bikers can employ the avenue on weekends.
